Urdhva HastasanaUrdhva-Hastasana
Urdhva Hastasana, also known by the name Upward Salute pose, is a posture that lengthens and stretches the sides of the body. There are numerous modifications or variations of the pose to suit many practictioners and it’s important to find the version that meets the needs and optimizes the individual practitioner’s health and practice. In upward salute pose, the arms extend up toward the ceiling. The hands can remain separated shoulder distance apart, or wider depending on shoulder flexibiility. You can alternately bring the palms to touch. In the deeper version of the pose, there is a backbed in just the upper back as you bring your gaze up toward the ceiling and the heart opens up toward the sky. If you are working with any neck sensitivity or neck injury, leaving your gaze ahead, to maintain the natural alignment of the curvature in the neck, is likely a more appropriate and supportive variation.
