World Gratitude Day

It does seem that every day is now holiday, of sorts.

However, a day dedicated to reminding us to be greatful for what we have, is one worth acknowledging and practicing.

Today is World Gratitude Day. Also falling on the equinox, which represents transition and change, take a moment to connect with and acknowledge all of the people, experiences and things (grand and small) for which you are grateful.

Create your own mantra, of things, people and experiences, for which you are grateful. Recite it to yourself.

Shanti.

Child’s Posechilds-pose-balasana

Child’s Pose, or balasana, is a body opening restful pose that opens virtually the entire body (opens the legs while lengthening the spine.)

There are several variations to balasana, including a wide-legged version or stacking forearms to create a support upon which the forehead can rest. If you have knee sensitivity, consider eliminating this pose and substitute laying on back and hugging legs to body.

Balasana is a great way to connect with your body and breath and assist with the process of drawing your senses inward.

Enjoy your commune with your body in balasana. You deserve it!

Shanti.

I had the pleasure of hearing the Dalai Lama lecture on the Buddhist concept of Bodhicitta and the subject of forbearance.

To paraphrase his lecture from my notes, he shared:

“…because I am able to practice forbearance, my enemy should reap the benefits, because they caused/initiated me into my practice. Though my enemy does not have the intention to benefit me, I should be thankful to them.”

In practice, forbearance is in line with yoga philosophy of maintainng a present mind and using your presence of mind to put into practice peace and empathy. I found this lecture so profound, I wanted to share it.

Anti-Stink Gearanti-stink
The more you work to integrate an active lifestyle into your existence, innovation and technology in fitness can assist with the process. When you’re going from class or gym, straight to lunch with friends or to the office, some new athletic technology can help help keep the “stink” from your workout at bay, whether on your body or in your clothes hamper.

I have purchased some of these brands myself and I do find that the clothing holds significantly less post-workout odor when compared to standard athletic wear, especially if you engage in a vigorous fitness intensity.

(1) Lululemon Silverscent Technology- Anti-Stink Gear
(2) Under Armour UA Tech- Moisture Transport System
(3) Athleta- Unstinkable technology

This technology can help make life a little easier and facilitate your active lifestyle. Every bit helps!

Shanti.

Supta Virasanasupta-virasana
Supta Virasana, or Reclined Hero’s Pose, is a deep posture that stretches and lengthens through the front side of the body. It is one of the rare poses where the internal hip rotator muscles are engaged.

If you experience knee sensitivity or if you are working through a knee surgery, injury, including knee replacement, this pose may be one to modify or completely replace, to avoid knee compression. Similarly, if you have a low back injury, this pose may be replaced or executed with support or props underneath the buttocks and back to access varying levels of the posture.

To find the pose, come to a seated position with legs extended. If comfortable, transition into sitting on top of your shins. Next, work to separate the heels, allowing your hips to settle between your feet (as needed, place a blanket or yoga block underneath the hips to support the pose). Once in a comfortable position, you can begin to recline the torso back, only going as far as is comfortable for your body. You can prop yourself up on your fingertips, forearms or completely recline and extend the arms overhead.

Once in your variation of Hero’s Pose, enjoy the stretch and luxuriate in the gratitude and benefits of the pose.

Happy International Yoga Day!<3

Kicking off the “Yogi Postcards from Brooklyn” series for the summer season 2016. In light of the upcoming Breathe Browsville Yoga Festival in Brownsville, Brooklyn, I thought this would be the perfect location to kick off the series.

This shot at the New Lots Avenue station in Brownsville was not easy to get, because of the heavy traffic on the street, but I pass it weekly and the freight train line with ivy dangling from the top is, to me, one of the most beautiful sights in Brownsville.

Reminder, don’t forget to sign up to participate in the event through Eventbrite here.
