Urdhva Hastasana | Urdhva Hastasana, also known by the name Upward Salute pose, is a posture that lengthens and stretches the sides of the body. There are numerous modifications or variations of the pose to suit many practictioners and it’s important to find the version that meets the needs and optimizes the individual practitioner’s health and practice. In upward salute pose, the arms extend up toward the ceiling. The hands can remain separated shoulder distance apart, or wider depending on shoulder flexibiility. You can alternately bring the palms to touch. In the deeper version of the pose, there is a backbed in just the upper back as you bring your gaze up toward the ceiling and the heart opens up toward the sky. If you are working with any neck sensitivity or neck injury, leaving your gaze ahead, to maintain the natural alignment of the curvature in the neck, is likely a more appropriate and supportive variation. Inhale deeply into Upward Salute <3 Don’t forget to sign up to participate in the BREATHE BROWNSVILLE yoga festival on 6/26/16 here. |

The Brownsville community has heart, soul and a unique flavor that is all its own, but also has some of the highest rates of cardiovascular disease related mortalities and diabetes rates in all of NYC. The organizers of the BREATHE Brownsville yoga day hope to bring the community together to promote empowerment of health and wellness through yoga and through the promotion of health resources. A change in your environment and daily routine, even if just for a few days, can often lead to positive and reflective outcomes. Travel while engaging in fun activities is generally supportive of your hollistic health. And you don’t need to travel far to find these experiences. If you’re looking for yoga specific retreats, that offer classes and special workshops for mind-body development in the Northeast, The Omega Institute in upstate New York and Kripalu in Massachusetts, are time-honored institutions that offer retreats, classes and workshops in areas such as yoga and ayurveda. They also offer simple get aways from your daily routine, where you choose your activities. Both sometimes offer retreats abroad. I personally believe that you can create a mental and spiritual retreat anywhere and that you don’t necessarily need to travel accross the world to find personal growth, however, for those seeking yoga getaways, these institutions offer that, and more. I find napping on the couch to be a luxury that I extend to myself after a long day. Napping can be considered a bit of a treat when you have a busy schedule and don’t have time in your day to get enough sleep. Keeping naps to 20-30 minutes can help to increase alertness and reduce feelings of sluggishness. If you are a habitual napper for long periods (hey, I’m guilty), this can transition the body into the realm of inertia or what I call “lazy yogi pose.” I am a big proponent of “treating oneself” however, as we transition into the new season, it may be a good time to evaluate and reduce the time of your lazyyogiasana pose. <3 |
